Bullying is a topic that most people typically associate with children and teenagers. But surprisingly, bullying in the workplace is just as prevalent as bullying in school. Workplace bullies show their aggression towards their target in many different ways. Based on research, an overwhelming number of employees have either witnessed or experienced these kinds of behavior in the office.
There are some bullies who target subordinates or newcomers in the office. There are also some bullies who target their competition. Bullies do not necessarily choose targets that are incompetent. In fact, a lot of bullies target those who are talented and generally well-liked in the organization. It is because they see them as rivals. It could also be because they just don’t like that person’s values or personality. Whatever their reasons are, workplace bullies carry out coercive actions and show aggressive behavior in order to make other people’s lives more stressful than it should be.
Bullies, whether in school or in the office like manager bullying, usually have a lot of insecurities that they don’t know how to handle. They have a lot of shortcomings but they lack self-awareness so they are not able to address them properly. Hence, they would turn to menacing behavior and power-tripping. Because they lack reasonable judgment, they believe that being a bully makes them a superior kind.
The reason behind this
You might be wondering why bullies exist. Well, there could be a few reasons. They probably experienced a traumatic childhood that developed this negative behavior. They were probably bullied themselves when they were younger. This could be the reason why they are oddly fond of belittling other people and making things difficult for them. Another reason is jealously. Like what we mentioned earlier, for some bullies, it’s all about rivalry. If someone else is doing better than them, they really can’t do anything about it. That’s why they try unprofessional and destructive methods instead. There could be so many other reasons for this.
If you’re being targeted by an office bully, then there is nothing wrong with you. But there is something wrong with them. You see, there’s nothing wrong with being well-liked in the office. There’s nothing wrong with being non-confrontational. There’s nothing wrong with excelling in what you do and aiming for growth. The problem is the bullies. They don’t know how to handle their insecurities. They don’t know how to use their power properly.
Effects and possible solution
Prolonged and repeated duress in the workplace affects not only your physical and mental health. It also affects your confidence both in yourself and in your company. It affects your productivity too. If your office does not have policies that can protect you, then protect yourself with a strong network of supportive and influential coworkers. If worse comes to worst, give yourself a break and find yourself a better employer.
